RE: Bike ladder rack...yes or no?

From what I've read and heard, they are not the answer. They bounce the bikes around and loosen the ladder from the camper. If you do a search you should find some horror stories related to this.

RE: Reinventing Storage ( and apparently RVing )

I wonder what kind of mileage they get??? LOL! Looks like a good option for folks with a housing emergency. Don't know that I like not having a window or two though..

RE: back roads help from the people who know

In michigan I would suggest going all the way to Sault Ste Marie and the locks and the west to see the sights along the south shore of lake Superior including Whitefish Point, Pictured rocks, Munising, Copper Harbor on the Keeweenaw Peninsula, the Porcupine Mountains. Into Wisconsin take U.S. 2 to Ashland and the head north on 13 to Washburn,Bayfield, Cornucopia and over to Duluth-Superior on 13 where you get back to US 2. Duluth's Canal Park is a nice visit with lots of good eating establishments.

RE: brake controller choice when towing double

I have heard of folks using a regular controller on teh fiver and a surge brake system that did not require a controller on the second trailer. If it's a small one (under 3000#) I agree with previous post that you would not need brakes on that unit. I like my Prodigy controller a lot.

RE: Massachusetts to Northern Wisconsin

You'll be glad you chose the U.P. Route. Some of my favorites up there are Munising and the Shipwreck tours at Shipwrecktours.com along with the pictured rocks cruises at Muning. A bit further east the town of Grand Marais in nice and the beach there is very nice. Whitefish point and the shipwreck museum are awesome and the Soo Locks are nice. There's a couple RV parks right on the water at the Soo where the big boats go right by the shoreline. read the reviews on those, one of the parks had some bad press and were noted for low power and surges. the park farthest away from teh Lcoks was the better of the two as I recall from my reading. I plan on being there after labor day on our way around Lake Superior. The mackinaw bridge to the south is very impressive as is the area around it. Lots to do and see. Have a great trip!

RE: Massachusetts to Northern Wisconsin

I live about 30 miles from Winter and respectfully disagree with the other driving directions provided. Going to Minoqua is way out of the way. The quickest way I know is coming up I-94 to Osseo and then taking the short on CTH R to Agusta to cut over to STH 27 and run 27 all the way up to the jct with 70 at Ojibwa which is about 6 miles west of Winter. At Osseo you have to go east on hwy 10 for a short stretch and then catch R which is a good road and heads to your left (North) off 10 and goes into Agusta. At Agusta you will see hwy 27 and have to turn left (north) onto 27 and stay on that all the way up. Watch your speeds on 27. I would avoid Chicago on the I-80 to I39 route as suggested if you go that way. I-39 meets with I-90 at Rockford and I-94 merges into I-90 at Madison, WI and just keep going North. Stay on I-94 at Tomah (I-90 heads west to Minnesota)and keep going north. Osseo is about 20 miles south of Eau Claire. For scenic value I would suggest either the Upper Peninsula of Michigan route if you have never been there or the car ferry from Luddington to Mainitowoc. I've done both and they are very enjoyable. The south shore of Lake Superior in Wisconsin and on the Keewenaw peninsula is spectacular.

RE: Upper Wisconsin and Michican UP

The easiest way to Rhinelander from the twin cities is to take I-35 north to Forest Lake and US hwy 8 which goes right to Rhinelander. If you want 4 lanes most of the way take I-94 east from St. Paul to just east of Menominee where 29 goes straight east. Take 29 to 51 at Wausau, 51 north to Tomahawk and Hwy 8 and then east on 8 to Rhinelander. Hwy 8 is a good 2 lane highway that goes through quite a few small towns. The area at the MN-WI border near Taylor's Falls is pretty, the rest of the ride is a mix of farm land and woods. Hwy 8 is long and straight and not much else to see.n The traffic on 8 can be heavy at times especially coming out of Forest Lake so be careful in that area. There's a casino in Turtle Lake if you feel like donating to the tribes. You'll go through Barron, Cameron, Weyerhauser, Bruce, Ladysmith, Prentice and skirt the north end of tomahawk before you get near Rhinelander. If you have the time after leaving Rhinelander head north to the big lake as previously mentioned. The entire south shore of Lake Superior from Duluth east is very scenic, the north shore is also very nice. The area up around Bayfield, WI is one of my favorites but would be out of your way from Rhinelander. You'll probably go north on 51 to Ironwood and head east from there. The Porkies and the Keewenaw peninsula are a must see if you have not been there. I have some pics in the link in my signature from some of our adventures to Lake Superior.

RE: 5th Wheel advice needed

I pulled with a 1/2 ton for two years and upgraded to a 3/4 diesel. It was a spectacular difference. The diesel gets almost 20 mpg when not towning and averages around 12 pulling and has the braun to handle the load. My gasser was lucky to get 18 empty and was under 10 pulling. I never felt safe pulling with my half ton and was always stressed when traveling even though I never went much over a hundred miles at a time with it. When you drove that rig, you drove it if you know what I mean. With the 3/4 ton, it is much easier on everything. The added power, mileage and sanity makes having a diesel worth the extra cost in my mind.

RE: **WARNING** to heavy 5er owners!

I've crossed this bridge several times a few years ago on our way pheasant hunting just south of there. I can see why they are concerned. It's a unique old double decker bridge with s/b on the bottom deck and n/b on the top deck as I recall.

RE: who else??

My response to them (last night) was that the cost of everything else is keeping pace and I still get to sleep on my own bed.

RE: how much do you trust the next guy?

Only problem I've heard of locally was some campers teens going through coolers for beer at the local KOA a coupl years back. Have never had any bad experiences myself.

RE: Camp Fire Etiquette???

If I am leaving wood I usually ask a neighbor if they want it. One particular CG we stay at the owners get mad when we bring our own wood and leave it because it cuts into their sales. This is a high profit item for this particular cg because I know he can buy a dump truck load of cut to length scraps $15.00 plus his time to haul it and then sells small armloads for $4.00 each which I consider to be a rip off. One needs several bundles to have a decent fire for a couple of evenings. We bring real firewood from home and lots of it. No worry about the beetle problem because we're within 50 miles.

RE: What If?

I've done it toavoid a line at the main drop site. One concern a CG owner may have is that the individual sites may not have the capacity to deal with a large influx of effluent. It depends on the park but I know in one that the full hook up sites had individual little systems as opposed to the main dump site that had a large holding tank and drain field. One person dumping would not matter but if 3 or 4 hit it back to back it could become a problem.

RE: Woodpecker Racket...!!

It's that time of the year for woodpeckers, they are doing mating calls. We have a few in the area, one is pecking on the house at about 5:30 a.m. for the past week. His life is going to come to an abrupt halt if he keeps it up...

RE: NJ to Minnesota, avoid Chicago?

I second the I-39 to I-90 route. Going all the way to I-35 in Iowa would be a waste of time and money.

RE: Ants

That is why I spray the ties, jacks, electrical cord, water hose every time we set up. I was spraying everything but the cord and was still getting them and could not figure it out.... Hopefully this will safe somebody else the frustration if they read this. Thanks for your replies!

Ants

Discovered today that my dang black ants are climbimng into my camper on my power cord. Never considered that last year when I sprayed. Caught em red handed today and hopefully that will solve the issue.

RE: SW FLORIDA TO BIRMINGHAM, AL

We drove across 82 last fall in a small van and I did not care for it at all. I would not want to pull my 5er accross it. In Alabama it was like an average county road in places. It seemed like it took forever to get to I-75 and we were still in Geogia. The year before when we went down, We went down through Dothan on 231 to I-10 and caught 19 just east of Talahassee and followed that down to Chiefland and then took 27 over to Ocala to I-75. That was a nice drive and quite a bit was 4 lane that was uncrowded.

RE: Durango RR Trip

Get an open car. You can see SO MUCH better. We stayed in an RV park in Silverton just off the main drag in town. Can't remember the name. Or, you can drive through town toward Animas Forks (ghost town) and boobdock. There's a really nice spot and we've seen lots of people there. Or, drive north of Silverton to Ouray or Ridgeway. There's a really nice state park, Dutch Charlie, north of Ridgeway. What's Boobdocking??? LOL!!! Is that like parking overnight in the lot at a adult club or something??? :@ Just kidding, one little typo got a good chuckle :)
